Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. At the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) 4th National Delegates Conference held at the Bintumani Conference Centre in Freetown, the Acting Chairman of the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC), Ambassador Osman Foday Yansaneh, delivered a notable address in which he urged the ruling party to choose a presidential candidate the APC could defeat in the 2028 general elections.
The two-day conference, running from July 30 to 31, is centered around the election of a new national executive for the SLPP, setting the stage for preparations ahead of the next electoral cycle. Delegates from across the country gathered to chart the future direction of the party.
Speaking on behalf of the APC, Ambassador Yansaneh extended goodwill to the SLPP delegates and conveyed greetings from APC Chairman Minkailu Mansaray, who was absent. He emphasized the importance of internal democracy and mutual respect between the nation’s major political parties.
“We are committed to consolidating the democratic gains we have achieved together over the years,” Yansaneh stated. He acknowledged the significance of selecting strong party leadership and reiterated the APC’s ambition to return to power in 2028. His remarks included a pointed appeal: “I hope and pray that you have a successful convention and provide us with a candidate we can defeat in 2028.”
Yansaneh’s presence and message signaled an attempt to maintain a tone of cooperation despite political rivalry. He also referenced the shared responsibility of national leadership, stating, “We should all be our brothers’ keepers.”
The SLPP’s conference continues as delegates vote on key positions within the party. Political observers note that the tone and content of Yansaneh’s speech reflect ongoing political tensions, but also a commitment to democratic processes ahead of what is expected to be a highly competitive 2028 election.
