Government Launches $1 Million Empowerment Project

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. In a press conference held on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, Minister of Social Welfare, Melrose Karminty, announced that the government is set to launch a major Economic Empowerment Project aimed at supporting Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Sierra Leone.

Backed by nearly $1 million in funding secured in New York, the project is designed to enhance the skills, independence, and livelihoods of disabled individuals across the country.

The project is set to officially launch on Friday, July 11, 2025, and will focus on constructing and renovating training centers throughout the nation.

By doing so, the government aims to discourage street begging and foster skill-building among disabled persons.

“The initiative includes building and renovating training centers across the country to discourage street begging and promote skill-building among disabled persons,” she affirmed.

The announcement was part of a broader update on various national development projects, economic performance, and social welfare initiatives presented by key government ministers and agency heads during the conference.

The Empowerment Project is expected to provide PWDs with valuable training and resources, enabling them to participate more fully in the economy and society.
