Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The President of Sierra Leone, Dr. Julius Maada Bio, who currently serves as the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, has arrived in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, to participate in the 7th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union (AU). The summit is scheduled for July 13, 2025.
The gathering will bring together Heads of State and Government from AU member states, along with representatives from Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and the African Union Commission (AUC).
The primary aim of the summit is to assess the continent’s progress in areas such as regional integration, peace and security, governance, and sustainable development.
As the ECOWAS Chairman, President Bio is set to deliver a crucial statement on behalf of West African nations during the session focused on regional integration.
The session will also feature contributions from other regional leaders, including the Chairpersons of the East African Community (EAC), Southern African Development Community (SADC), and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), among others.
President Bio’s address is anticipated to highlight key issues such as economic recovery, regional stability, and the need for improved coordination between the AU and the RECs.
The summit’s agenda will notably cover a range of topics, including the current status of continental integration, the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and Africa’s strategic response to global geopolitical changes.
Discussions at the summit is poised to focus on conflict prevention, institutional reform, and the alignment of policies between the AU and the RECs.
Hosting the meeting is President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea, while the summit will be chaired by President João Lourenço of Angola, who is the current Chairperson of the African Union.
