Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio has officially opened the Maternal Center of Excellence in Kono on October 25, 2025.

The newly commissioned state-of-the-art facility stands as a symbol of hope and commitment to reducing maternal mortality and promoting safer childbirth. President Bio reaffirmed his government’s dedication to ensuring that “every woman deserves safe childbirth and every child a healthy start in life.”

During the Commission’s ceremony, President Bio emphasized that the work is far from over, noting that the new center will serve as a cornerstone for further improvements in women’s and children’s health outcomes, as over the years, Sierra Leone has achieved significant progress, reducing maternal mortality by an impressive 70 percent.

The cutting-edge facility will offer top-tier maternal and newborn services to the Eastern and Southern regions of Sierra Leone. With a 120-bed maternity ward and a specialized baby care unit, it also features the country’s first neonatal intensive care unit.

The center includes a training site with a 60-bed dormitory, a center for education with one classroom, two lecture halls, two simulation rooms, a computer lab, and a library.

This facility built by Partners in Health and the Government of Sierra Leone is dedicated to supporting women throughout their reproductive journey, providing comprehensive care during pregnancy, childbirth, and reproductive health.

“This center represents our collective determination to provide world-class healthcare to mothers and families, especially in underserved regions like Kono. Together, we are building a stronger, healthier Sierra Leone,” President Bio said.

In conclusion, President Bio stated that this state-of-the-art facility in Kono symbolizes our hope and determination to support women and families, ensuring better health outcomes.

“I want to thank Partners in Health and our development partners for their ongoing support.” He stated.

The project aligns with the government’s Free Quality Health Care initiative and broader national development goals aimed at ensuring equitable access to essential health services for all citizens.
