Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Government of Sierra Leone and the United States Embassy, Freetown, are set to collaborate on a public awareness campaign aimed at educating citizens about the risks associated with visa overstays in the U.S.
The initiative was discussed during a recent meeting between Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, and Jacqueline Moore, Director of Public Affairs at the US Embassy.
The meeting focused on the civic responsibility of adhering to visa regulations, with both parties agreeing on the need to highlight the personal and national consequences of overstaying.
Minister Bah emphasized that respecting immigration laws is crucial, stating, “We must understand the personal and national consequences of overstaying visas.” He underscored that compliance is not just a legal obligation but also a matter of national pride.
To promote the message, the campaign will utilize various platforms to reach a wide audience across Sierra Leone. Minister Bah also announced plans to address visa compliance during town hall meetings with Sierra Leoneans in the United States, which will take place during the UN General Assembly in September.
In addition to visa issues, the discussions included potential partnerships under the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) program, cultural exchanges, and strengthening ties between the two nations.
Moore reaffirmed the US commitment to working with Sierra Leone, commending the government’s efforts in the repatriation of nationals and expressing optimism about resolving temporary visa restrictions.
Both sides expressed confident that sustained cooperation and public engagement will enhance opportunities for Sierra Leoneans and deepen the longstanding relationship between Sierra Leone and the United States.
