Sierra Leone Police Launch Mortuary and Eye Clinic

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Inspector General of Police William Fayia Sellu marked the start of construction for a mortuary at Kingtom Police Hospital and officially inaugurated a new eye clinic on Thursday, 14 August 2025.

The event brought together senior police officers, hospital staff, and community members. The ceremony is part of ongoing efforts to improve the hospital’s facilities and medical services. The Medical Superintendent, ASP John Mumuneh Konteh, outlined the three main purposes of the gathering:

To open the new eye clinic.

To begin construction of the mortuary.

To announce that a Spanish medical team will arrive on 19 September 2025 to provide free surgeries for patients.

ASP Konteh thanked the IGP for his steady support in the hospital’s development. He confirmed that a mortuary refrigerator has been secured to ensure proper storage of bodies once construction is completed, which is expected to start soon. The newly opened eye clinic is fully equipped to provide eye care services to police officers, their families, and the public.

In his speech, IGP Sellu spoke about the hospital’s state before he took office. He described it as lacking resources and needing improvements. Improving the hospital was one of his first tasks as IGP. He praised staff for their dedication despite challenges such as limited equipment.

Sellu said the hospital now serves police officers, their families, and the wider community. He noted that the hospital has grown into a teaching facility where medical staff and trainees gain practical experience.

He also spoke about upgrades made with help from the visiting Spanish doctors. A modern operating theatre was set up through their support. Most laboratory tests are now done on-site, cutting down the need to send samples elsewhere. Plans are in place to buy an X-ray machine and scanning equipment to help the hospital become more self-sufficient.

Looking ahead, Sellu said the hospital plans to open a nursing school. This school will train and keep skilled nursing staff, which is important for the hospital’s future.

Regarding the mortuary, Sellu said having this facility on the hospital grounds has been a long-term goal. He said he was glad that a mortuary refrigerator is already in place and that construction will begin soon. He urged the hospital team to continue working together to complete the project.

Chief Medical Examiner and Chief Superintendent of Police Simeon Owiz Koroma also spoke. He thanked the IGP for his leadership and support. Koroma called on police officers to continue supporting the hospital’s development.

The ceremony ended with the IGP officially opening the eye clinic, marking the start of work on the mortuary, and handing over the mortuary refrigerator to hospital staff.

This event marks progress for Kingtom Police Hospital. The opening of the eye clinic, the upcoming free surgeries, and the planned mortuary aim to improve medical care for police officers and the wider community. These changes also help the hospital train future healthcare workers in Sierra Leone.
