AFCON brings PL to hiatus

Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Mainland Premier League has taken a break as 2025 AFCON finals in Morocco are set to begin later this month.

With the league set to resume in January, the standings suggest a fiercely competitive campaign ahead, though it is still early to predict the ultimate champions or relegation casualties.

At the summit, JKT Tanzania currently lead the table with 17 points from 10 matches, narrowly ahead of defending champions Young Africans, who sit second with 16 points despite playing a game fewer.

Both teams have shown attacking prowess, with JKT Tanzania scoring 12 goals and Young Africans an impressive 12 while conceding just one, signalling a potent mix of firepower and defensive solidity.

Pamba and Mashujaa are also making their presence felt near the top, each accumulating 16 and 13 points respectively. Pamba’s campaign has been consistent, with four wins and only a single defeat so far, while Mashujaa’s form has been slightly erratic but remains a contender in the early title race.

Simba and Namungo occupy the mid-table positions with 12 points each, demonstrating flashes of brilliance but also vulnerability. Simba, in particular, has shown resilience in recent fixtures, stringing together four successive wins after a slow start.

Meanwhile, Mtibwa Sugar and Fountain Gate round out the top eight, with both sides showing signs of promise but needing greater consistency if they are to challenge for the top spots.

At the lower end of the table, Kinondoni MC faces a steep battle with only four points from nine matches. Dodoma Jiji, Tanzania Prisons and Mbeya City also find themselves flirting with the relegation zone, with goal differences reflecting defensive frailties and inconsistent performances.

Coastal Union, Singida Black Stars and TRA United remain under pressure to consolidate their positions as the league resumes in January.

Analysts caution that with half the season still to play, the race for the title and the battle to avoid relegation remain wide open.

Early leaders like JKT Tanzania and Young Africans have laid a strong foundation, but momentum can shift quickly in the Mainland Premier League, where competitive balance and spirited performances often produce surprises.

As the league prepares to restart in the new year, fans will be keen to see whether the early frontrunners can maintain their form, or if mid-table contenders and struggling sides can turn their fortunes around in a bid for glory or survival.
