Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Baptist Church of Tanzania (BCT) has officially launched construction of its new national headquarters in Dodoma, marking a significant milestone as the church relocates its administrative activities to the capital city.
The launch ceremony took place during the church’s 49th General Assembly and was officiated by the Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Prof Palamagamba Kabudi who represented President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
In his remarks, Prof Kabudi congratulated the church for its unwavering commitment to spreading the gospel and serving the community since its establishment in 1956.
“I commend you for your steadfast service since 1956. Next year marks your 70th anniversary, your Diamond Jubilee. With over two million members, representing more than 4 per cent of the Tanzanian population, your presence is significant and deeply rooted,” he said.
The minister further applauded the church for its holistic approach to ministry, which includes social services. “You have gone beyond spiritual service.
You have established theological colleges, schools, dispensaries and health centres. You have touched the minds, bodies and souls of Tanzanians. For that, we are truly grateful,” he added.
Prof Kabudi also relayed President Samia’s pledge of 50m/- to support the construction of the new headquarters.
Speaking during the event, the Head of the Church, Bishop Arnold Manase Mollel, expressed appreciation to the Dodoma Regional Commissioner’s Office for their support in facilitating the land acquisition and construction process.
“I extend special thanks to the Regional Commissioner. This land was highly contested when we acquired it, especially before the government relocated to Dodoma. The process came with challenges, but with the support of the land authorities and regional leadership, we have made significant progress,” said Bishop Mollel.
Dodoma Regional Commissioner, Ms Rosemary Senyamule, pledged continued cooperation with the church.
“I congratulate Bishop Elyashimba on officially becoming the Bishop of the Central Zone. We’ve worked together on many initiatives. With this honour bestowed upon you, we stand ready to offer support to ensure the church continues to enjoy peace, stability and growth,” she said.
Presenting a report to the guest of honour, the Church’s Secretary General noted that the headquarters project is expected to cost over 800m/- , with construction progressing in phases.
Founded in 1956 and formally registered in 1971, the Baptist Church of Tanzania has grown to encompass seven zones, 57 dioceses, and over two million members nationwide.
