Africa-Press – Tanzania. TANGA District Commissioner, Hashim Mgandilwa, has issued a warning, declaring that without smart investments in water source maintenance, water resources cannot be sustained.

Mgandilwa issued the caution while speaking at the Tanga Water Fund establishment workshop.

The DC stated that there is a need to invest in source maintenance, especially when you take into account that the condition of natural water sources was better 40 or 50 years ago.

Imagine how things will be in 50 years, he said, and you’ll realise how important it is to make sufficient investments in water source maintenance if you want to have reliable water supplies.

Mgandilwa cautioned that things would get much worse in the future, if people kept acting selfishly.

In order to preserve this resource, he gave water stakeholders the instruction to use the funds that were returned to the community to maintain local water sources.

He highlighted the impact of creating the water fund and how it will aid in maintaining the water sources.

Timothy Sosia, the Regional Environment Officer, spoke about the fund, saying that it will work to ensure that Tanga has sustainable water resources for the significant investments Tanga has received.

According to Agnes Lukindo, Acting Director of the Tanga Urban Water and Sanitation Authority (Tanga UWASA), despite the adoption of by laws governing the management of water sources, these sources have continued to be harmed by an increase in human activity.

These human activities have had a significant impact on the destruction of water sources and the depletion of water supplies.

The authority has had to spend a considerable amount of money to remedy the situation because the effects of these human activities have led to an increase in turbidity and water hyacinth in the dam.

According to her, Tanga Uwasa and the existing villages in the East Usambara mountains reached an agreement to involve the villagers in the preservation and upkeep of the environment in the areas that border the Zigi River, which supplies water to the Mabayani Dam.

Ms Lukindo contended that Tanga Uwasa contributes 100m/- annually through a Villages conservation Alliance known as UWAMAKIZI to support various conservation initiatives.

Additionally, she added, it has been discovered that the Authority’s efforts alone are insufficient. She said that other stakeholder’s support is required for conservation efforts in order to ensure that the City of Tanga continues to have access to enough water in the long term.
