Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Tanzania Trade Development Authority (Tantrade) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Geita regional office, aimed at putting more thrust to transform the region’s mining exhibitions to international standard.

The signing ceremony took place at the Mwalimu Nyerere Grounds, Kilwa Road in Dar es Salaam on Monday.

Speaking to journalists, Tantrade Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Ms Latifa Khamis said they aim to strengthen professional relations.

She said Tantrade has extensive experience in organizing exhibitions, a reason why they saw the need to seal the deal that would see them support coordination of the mining exhibition and other activities.

“Geita region is determined to continue adding value to the annual mining exhibition that has been going on for over five years now.

“They want to improve it and attain international standard. For the fair to attain international mark, organisers must work closely with Tantrade to be more successful. They are here today visiting the booths where they are also learning how to prepare and organize such exhibition,” said Ms Khamis.

She noted that in order to have an international exhibition there are many things to be done, including building large, permanent and quality stalls to host exhibitors from across the globe.

On her part, Geita Regional Commissioner, Ms Rosemary Senyamule said the signing of the agreement was a step in the right direction for the exhibition to grow.

“It is important to strengthen the exhibition because mining sector contributes significantly to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which stood at 7.3 per cent in 2021.

“We have to continue supporting President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s efforts to attract investors through the economic diplomacy,” Ms Senyamule said, adding that elevating the mining exhibition to the international level will certainly attract more investors toTanzania.

She also used the platform to invite Tanzanians to participate in the exhibition, which takes place in September each year.

The Geita Town Council Executive Director, Ms Zahara Michuzi said the international exhibition is going to change the image of Geita region, as more investors will flock in the region and make it grow faster economically.

She urged the people in the region to grab the opportunity to invest in various sectors including hotels and agriculture, as the region is going to receive a big number of visitors, who will be participating in the exhibition.

Tanzania’s mining sector contribution to the national economy increased to 7.3 per cent in 2021 from 6.5 per cent recorded in 2020.

Mineral Minister, Dr Doto Biteko said the government’s projection is to see the mining sector contributes 10 per cent to the national economy by 2025, but this can be realised much earlier.

Dr Biteko told a press conference in Dodoma recently that the mining sector made history in the past one year, when minerals sales reached 8.3tri/- and the government collected 597.53bn/- in taxes and royalties.

He noted that Tanzanians’ participation in the mining sector services increased from 43 per cent to 63 per cent when mining services collections were 579.3 million U.S. dollars.
