Africa-Press – Uganda. Kin Kariisa, a member of the Local Organising Committees (LOC) for CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027, has officially resigned from both roles, citing personal reasons.
In a letter addressed to the Chairperson of the CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027 Organising Committees, Kariisa stated that his decision to step down is effective immediately and follows “careful reflection.”
He noted that the move was necessary to allow him to focus on personal matters requiring his full attention.
“It has been a true honour to serve alongside a dedicated team working toward two of the most significant events in Uganda’s sporting history,” Kariisa wrote.
“I am proud of the strides we have made together in preparing to host the continent and showcasing the best of Ugandan talent and hospitality,” he added.
Kariisa’s resignation comes at a critical time as Uganda gears up to co-host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in 2024 and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027.
Both events are seen as major opportunities to elevate Uganda’s profile on the continental sports stage, boost tourism, and improve local infrastructure.
Although stepping down from the LOC, Kariisa, who also serves as the Group CEO of Next Media, reaffirmed his continued support for Uganda’s preparations and sporting ambitions.
“While I may no longer serve in an official capacity, I remain fully supportive of the Committee’s efforts. Through my role at Next Media, I will continue to advocate for and contribute to the success of both tournaments and the overall growth of Ugandan sport,” he stated.
His departure was officially communicated to the Committee Chairperson and copied to the Minister of Education and Sports and the Permanent Secretary at the ministry.
Kariisa’s involvement in the LOCs was considered a strategic asset, particularly in mobilizing media visibility, public engagement, and private sector support for the upcoming continental tournaments.
His exit will likely prompt discussions within the organising bodies about restructuring roles and responsibilities as Uganda intensifies its preparations.
Both CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027 are being organised through joint efforts between Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya under the East Africa Pamoja bid. The tournaments are expected to bring significant economic and diplomatic benefits to the host nations.
As of press time, the CHAN-AFCON Local Organising Committee had not issued an official response to Kariisa’s resignation.
However, sources within the Ministry of Education and Sports indicated that the committee remains confident in delivering successful tournaments despite the high-profile exit.
Kariisa concluded his letter with gratitude to the committee and expressed optimism for the future.
“I sincerely thank you and the entire Committee for the opportunity to be part of this important national assignment. I wish you continued success in the work ahead,” he said.
