Mbidde Plots ‘Deadly Strategy’ to Secure Mao’S Fourth Term as DP President

Africa-Press – Uganda. Democratic Party (DP) National Vice President Fred Mukasa Mbidde has pledged to lead a “deadly strategy” to secure Norbert Mao’s re-election as party president, despite recent public disagreements between the two.

Mbidde, who has in recent months been a vocal critic of Mao’s leadership, was officially unveiled by Mao as the head of his campaign team.

The announcement was made at the DP headquarters in Kampala, where Mao had gone to pick nomination forms to seek a fourth term as the party’s president.

“I am happy to announce that my national vice president will lead my campaigns leading to my election as the president for the next five years,” Mao declared, with Mbidde standing by his side along with Secretary General Gerald Siranda and other senior party officials.

In an apparent gesture of unity, Mbidde accepted the appointment with enthusiasm, pledging to do everything within his means to deliver Mao’s victory at the upcoming Delegates Conference scheduled for May 30 in Mbarara.

“I happily accept the duty you have bestowed upon me to make sure that we end up victorious in Mbarara,” Mbidde said, adding, “Mr. President, I am going to use a deadly strategy to make you win.”

Mbidde revealed that the campaign strategy would focus heavily on mobilising support from the eastern and central regions—areas he believes are critical to Mao’s re-election.

“We are going to have two conventional centers—one in the Central and the other in the East. Mr. President, those will deliver you to Mbarara and see that you are declared winner,” he explained.

The apparent mending of fences between the two DP leaders comes at a crucial time as the party gears up for internal elections.

Mao, who has led the DP since 2010, is seeking another five-year term.

Nomination forms are expected to be returned by May 6, ahead of the May 30 Delegates Conference where party leaders will vote on the next president.

Mao’s decision to appoint Mbidde—despite their recent fallout—signals a strategic move to consolidate support and avoid further divisions within the party as it prepares for a potentially competitive internal election.
