Africa-Press – Angola. The minister of Youth and Sports, Rui Falcão, on Wednesday in Luanda highlighted the competitive level of young African athletes.
The minister who was speaking at the opening of the table tennis tournament, which symbolized the start of the African Youth Games, stated that the athletes have quality and expressed his belief in a promising future for the continent in the upcoming editions of the Olympic Games.
He emphasized, however, that the event started with the delay of some delegations, and took the opportunity to praise the involvement of the competitors.
Rui Falcão appealed to all participants to demonstrate commitment, despite the challenges, in order to make the 4th African Youth Games a true celebration of sport, reinforcing that this is the largest multi-sport competition ever organized in Angola.
The table tennis competitions continue on Thursday at 9 am with the eliminatory phase.
Angolans Filipe Manuel, with one win and one loss, and Filomena Caxala, who benefited from the absence of both her opponents, secured their qualification.
On Thursday, other competitions will also begin, notably athletics, karate, beach volleyball, and canoeing.
The opening ceremony of the African Games is scheduled for Saturday (13).
The multidisciplinary event, taking place under the motto “Youth in motion, Africa united”, in the provinces of Luanda and Bengo, involved 2,025 athletes and more than 600 technical officials, representing 54 countries, and aims, among other objectives, to stimulate the spirit of fraternity and African unity.
