Africa-Press – Angola. At least 3,120 people died in 2024 across the country as a result of 12,303 cases of road accidents, the National Director of Road and Traffic Planning said Thursday in Luanda.

Speaking at the 1st workshop on Prevention and Road Safety, Commissioner Abel Baptista said that the situation continues to be worrying, as there has been a reduction of only one death, compared to the previous period (2023).

According to the national director, in the same period in question, 16,282 injuries were recorded, caused by 4,222 run-overs, 2,491 collisions between vehicles and motorbikes and 1,000 rollovers.

‘The public safety situation still inspires care, although we have noticed a reduction in accidents, deaths and injuries’, said Abel Baptista, stating that Luanda leads the accident statistics because it is the metropolitan city.

After the country’s capital, the commissioner continued, are the provinces of Benguela, Huambo and Huíla, which each concentrate more than two million inhabitants, as well as register intense road moments daily.

In turn, the Secretary of State for National Defence, José Maria de Lima, said that everyone should contribute to the reduction of road accidents, hence the Ministry of Defence is holding a cycle of lectures and workshops on the subject.

‘We want to practice what we have learned and heard. We have seen the causes and consequences of accidents. So, military and civilians can make the precautionary contribution of our life on the roads and also of the lives of others’, he stressed.

‘Taking into account the current statistics on road accidents, he warned, it is important to discuss the subject in forums like this, in order to raise the awareness of the staff for their participation in the mitigation of such a phenomenon.

In the view of the Secretary of State for National Defence, with the engagement of all citizens together it is possible to make Angola’s roads safer and ensure that, in the future, aviation accidents reduce considerably.

The Workshop took place at the Support Unit of the General Staff of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) under the motto ‘Safe Driving, Protected Lives’, and was under the theme ‘Road Accidents, A Battle We Won Together’.
