Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, warned this Monday in Geneva, Switzerland, about the negative effects of climate change on African women.

Speaking at the session entitled “Emerging Challenge to Inclusive and Lasting Peace and the Way Forward,” part of the 15th Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament, Carolina Cerqueira stated that the climate crisis poses a serious threat to peace and stability, exacerbating social and gender inequalities on the African continent.

According to the parliamentarian, deeply rooted cultural, economic, and social structures place women in a situation of greater vulnerability.”African women are on the front lines of climate impacts. They are the ones who ensure subsistence farming, collect water and firewood, and provide for their families,” she said.

She emphasized that phenomena such as drought, natural disasters, and forced displacement not only overburden these women but also expose them to extreme situations of hunger, violence, and exclusion.

Carolina Cerqueira lamented women’s unequal access to productive resources, agricultural credit, technologies, and property rights.

She argued that “climate justice will only be possible with gender justice” and called for women’s involvement in decision-making processes regarding natural resource management and climate finance.

“Without the full involvement of women, there will be no inclusive peace, nor effective and lasting solutions to the environmental crisis,” she emphasized.

The President of the National Assembly reaffirmed Angola’s commitment to inclusive public policies that promote gender equality, climate justice, and the construction of sustainable peace in Africa and the world.

The Summit of Women Speakers of Parliaments takes place on the sidelines of the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments, which takes place from the 29th to the 31st of this month in Geneva.Established in 2000, the Conference is a global platform for dialogue between parliamentary leaders on the main challenges of today.
