Africa-Press – Angola. The university must take the lead in valuing, preserving and elevating the values of the African continent, with the transformation of culture, habits and customs into science, stressed, this Thursday, in Huambo, academic Armindo Jelembi.

The university professor was speaking at a lecture on “The role of the university in promoting, preserving and disseminating the identity of the continent”, promoted by the Brigada Jovem de Literatura, in partnership with the Instituto Superior Politécnico Lusíada, as part of the celebrations of Africa Day, which yesterday is marked.

He referred that higher education institutions, as they are intrinsically linked to culture, have the responsibility of studying, producing and disseminating knowledge, which contribute to the affirmation of the true values of a given society, without incurring the process of acculturation.

According to the academic, the university, in Huambo in particular, should study and scientificize the cultural aspects of the Umbundu kingdoms, with emphasis on the Bailundo, Chiyaca and Sambo, to document, disseminate and elevate the legacy, in terms of sovereignty, language, habits and customs.

In turn, the jurist Augusto Roque Sapengo, who spoke about “Traditional authority in Angolan law”, proposed the approval, by the National Assembly, of a law that regulates their activity, so that they can exercise it without violating the norms legal.

He explained that the approval of this law should occur in parallel with the implementation of local authorities, to regularize the competences, between the two powers, with a focus on the harmonization and well-being of communities.

The director general of the Instituto Superior Lusíada do Huambo, Henrique Kossenge, considered that the event should serve as a reflection for the resolution of the problems that still affect the majority of Africans, such as hunger, unemployment, among others, which jeopardize the dignity of the human being.

At the event, the Government of the province of Huambo was represented by the head of the Cultural Action department, Pascoal Pedro Nhanga, who called on universities to develop studies aimed at the socio-economic development of the continent, “the cradle of humanity”.

Africa Day is celebrated yesterday, with the founding of the Organization of African Unity, now known as the African Union, on May 25, 1963.
