Africa-Press – Burundi. On September 18, Burundian President H. E. M. Evariste Ndayishimiye, accompanied by the First Lady H. E. Mrs. Angeline Ndayishimiye and some senior government officials including the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation H. E Amb. Albert Shingiro, began his journey in New York, at the headquarters of the United Nations (UN).

The President of the Republic of Burundi went there to take part in the activities of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly which opened on September 13, 2022 and whose first day of the high-level general debate was held on Tuesday, September 20.

Burundi having already undertaken economic diplomacy, the visit of H. E Evariste Ndayishimiye to the UN headquarters in New York is both diplomatic and economic.

Indeed, he conducts bilateral interviews with his counterparts, and one-on-one and group meetings with several American investors interested in business opportunities in Burundi.

On the sidelines of the activities of the United Nations General Assembly, HE Evariste Ndayishimiye has already met several personalities including his counterpart from the Republic of Ghana, HE Mr.Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Mrs. Molly Phee, Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs in US State Department. Their discussions focused on various subjects of common bilateral, regional and global interest.

The President of the Republic of Burundi also met with American investors in the fields of agriculture, health, trade, infrastructure, mining and information technology. For his part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation H. E Amb.Albert Shingiro is also pursuing bilateral meetings and signing agreements with his counterparts in the context of bilateral cooperation, and participation in multilateral ministerial meetings.

These include a fruitful meeting with his colleague Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt H. E.Sameh Shoukry, the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on the offer of scholarships to Burundian students by the Government of Hungary with his counterpart Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary H.E Péter Szijjártó and participation in various meetings including the ministerial meeting of the Group of Friends of the Global Development initiative.

It should be noted that in its capacity as Vice-President of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Burundi chairs the 6th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
