Emigration Lowers Easter Celebration Participation in Junco

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The town of Junco is experiencing some activity and maintaining traditions this Easter Sunday, although residents point to a decrease in the number of people compared to previous years, mainly due to emigration.

In the field, Inforpress observed an atmosphere marked by religious celebrations, family gatherings, and the preparation of typical foods.

Residents interviewed say, however, that the festival no longer has the same dynamism as in the past.

“The activity is weaker, it’s not like it used to be,” said Ana Gracinda Semedo, emphasizing that, despite this, “the food and the celebration remain normal.”

She also indicated that, currently, there is less openness of houses to receive visitors, a practice that was once common during this festive season.

Felizberta Andrade, known as “Preta,” also shares the same perception, stating that “there are fewer people” in the town during Easter, pointing to emigration as one of the main causes.

Even so, she considers that the date retains its value. “It’s a great day, important for the whole area,” he said.

Chiquinho, another resident, highlighted that, despite the reduction in the number of participants, the traditions remain alive, with the holding of cultural and religious activities, including family gatherings and the preparation of typical dishes.

For the residents, Easter continues to be a moment of spiritual significance.

“It’s the resurrection of Jesus Christ, it’s something that comes from a long time ago and must continue,” said Amélia Moreira, reinforcing the religious character of the celebration.

Despite the changes recorded over the years, the Junco community continues to preserve the Easter spirit, keeping alive the cultural and religious practices that mark this time of year.
