Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Government has decided to grant public servants, public institutes and local authorities a day off throughout the country on 24 and 31 December.
The measure was approved by Resolution No. 111/2024, at the Council of Ministers on 17 December, and published in the Official Gazette on 19 December.
“State servants and agents, public institutes and local authorities are granted a day off throughout the country on 24 and 31 December 2024, for the whole day”, states the same source.
According to the Resolution, the Government granted this day off because Christmas and New Year’s Eve are celebrations that are deeply rooted in Cape Verdean culture. “These are periods that are traditionally marked by many people travelling away from their place of residence in order to hold family gatherings”.
The Government justifies the public holiday “considering our status as an archipelago country and the need to create conditions so that employees can gather peacefully with their families for celebrations”.
The same source indicates that the Armed Forces, National Police, Judicial Police, health establishments, prison officers and services that operate on a non-stop basis, where the presence of employees is essential, are not covered by the public holiday. “These sectors maintain regular working hours”.
