Africa-Press – Cape verde. Authorities are preparing for the permanent resettlement of people remaining in shelter centers in São Vicente following the torrential rains of recent days, according to a statement given to the press this morning by Crisis Office spokesperson Vitória Veríssimo.
These families include both homeless families and those who were preemptively removed from their homes because they live in high-risk areas.
“The shelter centers continue to accommodate these people, and we are working, together with the relevant authorities, to attempt to permanently resettle these people. As we know, the school year begins on September 15th. As the Minister of Education has already stated, it will also begin as usual in São Vicente on the 15th. Therefore, we are working with the relevant organizations to ensure the permanent resettlement of these people,” she assured.
The official did not yet disclose the exact number of people to be relocated, but assured that the measure includes the 151 people preventively removed to José Augusto Pinto Secondary School, the 86 displaced people who remain at Monte Sossego School, and the 15 housed at the Internship Center.
“These people are among those who will be relocated, depending on the condition of their homes, because they all underwent a technical assessment, and, as you can understand, some houses are unsafe for habitation. These are houses that will probably be decided by the teams, and this will now be the responsibility of the land redevelopment teams and engineers, who will understand better, but for us at Civil Defense, these are houses that truly need to be demolished, because there are areas where housing is not permitted,” she noted.
When asked about the date for the final resettlement, the regional manager of Civil Defense explained that many of the houses are still in the finishing stages.
During a visit to the three shelters last week, the Minister of Family and Social Development, Fernando Elísio Freire, assured that the priority is the resettlement of 74 families facing housing emergency situations, including 12 who lost their homes completely. Freire said these families will be housed in apartments at the IFH Housing Complex in Ribeira de Julião.
Furthermore, he assured that the government will move forward with the rehabilitation of approximately 300 damaged homes, also covering families who, although not in shelters, live with relatives or in high-risk areas.
