Africa. Ethiopia and Morocco signed a new security agreement today, aimed at enhancing cooperation between the security and intelligence agencies of both countries, on the sidelines of the 93rd General Assembly of the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) held in Marrakech.

The signing took place between Ethiopian Federal Police Commissioner General Demelash Gebremichael and Moroccan National Security Director Abdellatif Hammouchi. The agreement focuses on developing cooperation between the police forces of the two countries, particularly in the areas of:

– Combating transnational crime.

– Smuggling networks.

– Human trafficking.

– Cybercrime.

This step follows months after the two countries signed a military cooperation agreement in June, which included the establishment of a joint military committee, signed at that time by Ethiopian Defense Minister Aisha Mohammed and Moroccan Minister Delegate for National Defense Abdellatif Loudyi.

A total of 179 countries are participating in the 93rd General Assembly of Interpol, represented by approximately 800 delegates, including 82 police directors and 25 ministers.

Interpol is the largest global gathering of security agency leaders, discussing the enhancement of security cooperation, experience exchange, policy formulation, programs, activities, and budgets.

The current assembly is expected to witness bilateral meetings and new agreements, in addition to the election of new members to the executive committee, including the new president of the organization.

Ethiopia and Morocco have a history of diplomatic relations that have evolved over the years, particularly in the context of regional security and cooperation. The recent signing of the security agreement reflects a growing trend among African nations to collaborate on security issues, especially in light of increasing transnational threats such as terrorism and organized crime.

The 93rd General Assembly of Interpol serves as a significant platform for member countries to discuss and address global security challenges. With 179 countries participating, the assembly highlights the importance of international cooperation in combating crime and enhancing security measures across borders.
