Africa. Duduzile Zuma Sambudla, daughter of former South African President Jacob Zuma, has resigned from Parliament amid allegations that she participated in luring 17 men to fight alongside Russian forces in Ukraine.

Zuma Sambudla’s resignation came on Friday after police announced they were investigating her alleged role in recruiting South Africans to fight in the Russian-Ukrainian war.

The Secretary-General of the “Umkhonto we Sizwe-Umkhonto” party, to which the MP belongs and which is led by her father, stated at a press conference that “the national officials accepted Comrade Duduzile Zuma Sambudla’s decision to resign and support her efforts to ensure the safe return of these young South Africans to their families.”

Secretary-General Nkosinathi Nleko confirmed that the party has no connection to the recruitment of these young men to Russia and emphasized that the resignation of the MP is not an admission of guilt. He noted that the party will support the families of those citizens currently stranded in Ukraine.

Party officials also mentioned that Zuma Sambudla’s resignation was voluntary, and they indicated that her departure from the National Assembly (Parliament) and all her other public positions takes effect immediately.

Zuma Sambudla attended the party’s press conference but did not make any statements, nor has she commented on the allegations originally made against her by her half-sister.

Allegations from Her Sister

The South African police announced days ago that they had opened an investigation based on a written statement submitted by Nkosazana Zuma Mnkobi, Duduzile Zuma Sambudla’s sister. The statement alleged that Duduzile and two others were involved in recruiting 17 South Africans to fight alongside the Russian army.

The Presidency of South Africa previously stated that it had received a request to rescue these citizens from the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine, which is experiencing fierce battles. It was reported that these men were “lured to Russia under false pretenses and then handed over to a Russian mercenary group to fight in the Ukrainian war without their knowledge or consent.”

These developments come at a time when the former president Jacob Zuma’s party is causing significant controversy in South Africa’s political scene, especially with repeated allegations against its members of having ties to contentious foreign positions. The case is seen as a new test of Pretoria’s relationship with the Ukrainian file, as the government attempts to maintain its declared neutral stance in the war between Russia and Ukraine while facing increasing international pressure.

The political landscape in South Africa has been shaped by the legacy of Jacob Zuma, who served as president from 2009 to 2018. His tenure was marked by numerous scandals and allegations of corruption, which have continued to affect his family’s reputation. The recent allegations against his daughter, Duduzile, reflect ongoing tensions within the political sphere, particularly regarding South Africa’s stance on international conflicts like the war in Ukraine.

As the country navigates its foreign policy, it faces challenges in maintaining a neutral position amid increasing global scrutiny. The allegations against Duduzile Zuma Sambudla have raised questions about the involvement of South Afr
