Africa. On December 2, the Nigerian presidency announced the appointment of General Christopher Musa, the former Chief of Army Staff, as the new Minister of Defense.
This decision came a day after the resignation of the former minister, Muhammad Badaru Abubakar, due to health reasons, according to an official statement.
Following the resignation, President Bola Tinubu sent a message to the Senate, which must confirm the appointment, stating that he trusts General Musa’s ability to “lead the Ministry of Defense and enhance the national security framework.”
Musa had left his position at the head of the army at the end of October as part of a broad military leadership reshuffle, which the government stated aimed to “strengthen the national security structure.”
Escalating Security Crisis
This change comes at a time when Nigeria is facing a severe security crisis, having witnessed a series of large-scale kidnappings in recent weeks. Notably, in Niger State, more than 300 students and 12 teachers were abducted from St. Mary’s School in the town of Babiri on November 21.
According to authorities, the number of abducted individuals across the country exceeded 400 within just 15 days, raising widespread public and official concern.
Last week, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency and unveiled a plan that includes deploying an additional 20,000 police personnel and tightening security at schools and places of worship.
He also canceled his participation in the recent G20 summit, preferring to remain in the country to address the crisis.
The Nigerian president faces criticism from abroad as well, with U.S. President Donald Trump and several Republican lawmakers accusing him of failing to protect Christians in Nigeria from what they described as “systematic attacks.”
Nigeria has faced significant security challenges in recent years, particularly due to the rise of insurgent groups and widespread banditry. The government has implemented various strategies to combat these issues, including military reshuffles and emergency declarations. The appointment of military leaders to key government positions reflects an ongoing effort to strengthen national security and address public concerns over safety and stability in the country.
