Africa. The African Union’s Peace and Security Council has called for Israel to “immediately withdraw its recognition” of Somaliland.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar visited Somaliland on Tuesday, a visit condemned by Somalia, just ten days after Israel officially recognized the self-declared republic as a sovereign state.
The Council stated in a post on X following a ministerial meeting: “The African Union strongly condemns, in the strongest terms, the unilateral recognition of the so-called ‘Republic of Somaliland’ by Israel.”
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991, but it has not been recognized by any UN member state. The region has maintained a stable government and democratic processes, distinguishing itself from the ongoing instability in Somalia. The recent recognition by Israel has sparked tensions, as Somalia considers Somaliland part of its territory and has sought to maintain its sovereignty claims over the region.
