Africa-Press. Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed discussed in Addis Ababa with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and the commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), General Dagvin Anderson, ways to strengthen relations and regional cooperation.
Abiy described the talks as “constructive and based on mutual respect,” according to an official statement.
Landau also met with Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timotheos, with whom he discussed enhancing bilateral relations. The two sides exchanged views on a number of regional issues, the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
The U.S. delegation also held separate meetings with Ethiopian Defense Minister Aisha Mohammed.
Ethiopia’s Ministry of Defense said the two sides agreed to work together to address security challenges in the region, including counterterrorism efforts.
The discussions also covered issues aimed at developing military relations and raising the level of bilateral coordination on regional matters.
The defense minister affirmed that the historical ties between the two countries call for elevating diplomatic and military cooperation to a strategic partnership.
The visit coincided with celebrations marking the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the Ethiopian Air Force, attended by U.S. officials. Anderson said the visit underscored the long-standing relationship between the two countries and helped lay the groundwork for future security cooperation in the Horn of Africa.
The meetings come amid renewed regional diplomacy following reports of a letter dated January 16, 2026, from U.S. President Donald Trump to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi proposing the resumption of talks on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
