Africa-Press. Egypt has assumed the presidency of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council for a one-month term, at a time when the continent is facing growing security challenges.
Egypt’s state-run Channel One quoted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as saying that Cairo begins its presidency of the Council as of 1 February.
In a statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Egypt took over the Council’s presidency at the start of February, succeeding the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which held the position in January.
The ministry noted that Egypt’s priorities will focus on addressing ongoing conflicts across the African continent.
Established in 2003, the Peace and Security Council is responsible for implementing African Union decisions and for preventing and resolving conflicts. It is composed of 15 member states, five of which are elected for three-year terms and ten for two-year terms.
