Africa-Press. The US space agency NASA has awarded Moroccan scientist Kamal Oudghiri the Exceptional Leadership Medal, in recognition of his distinguished scientific career and his leading role in managing complex and advanced space missions.

NASA stated that the medal is granted to individuals who demonstrate outstanding leadership that significantly contributes to mission success. The agency praised Oudghiri’s supervision of the Cold Atom Laboratory (CAL), the first quantum science laboratory operating in a space environment, which has been successfully running aboard the International Space Station since 2018.

The laboratory represents a major scientific breakthrough, enabling experiments at temperatures close to absolute zero. This opens new pathways for deeper understanding of quantum physics and the development of strategic technologies such as quantum computing and ultra-precise navigation systems.

Dr Oudghiri is regarded as one of the agency’s leading planetary scientists, with more than 20 years of experience across several fields, including planetary atmosphere science and space radio communications.

The US Embassy in Morocco welcomed the achievement, noting that the recognition reflects the strength of international scientific cooperation and highlights the role of global talent — particularly Moroccan scientists — in leading space innovation and shaping the future of global technology.
