Africa-Press. The president of the breakaway Somaliland administration, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, known as “Irro,” said that Israel is “the only country so far to have officially responded to Somaliland’s request for international recognition,” arguing that this move reflects a reality that has existed since Somaliland declared independence in 1991.

Speaking to the press, Irro said that Somaliland has over the past decades consolidated stability, built effective governing institutions and implemented democratic principles, stressing that it possesses the full attributes of statehood, including an organized army, its own currency, passport and defined borders.

He noted that on 17 May 2025 Somaliland sent official letters to 193 countries seeking recognition, adding that Israel was the first to respond, while expressing hope that other states would follow.

Irro also highlighted Somaliland’s strategic role in the Horn of Africa, particularly in security, trade and Red Sea maritime routes, describing the region as a “reliable partner” for the international community in projects based on peace, stability and shared interests.

In the same context, he confirmed the continuation of cooperation with DP World regarding investment and the modernization of the Port of Berbera, denying reports of any slowdown in cooperation. He also categorically rejected rumors alleging the forced relocation of Gaza residents to Somaliland, calling them “fabricated.”

Separately, reports said Irro returned to Dubai following an unannounced visit to Tel Aviv, allegedly facilitated through regional mediation. No official confirmation has been issued by the relevant authorities.
