The Gabonese High Authority for Communications has suspended social media services across the country indefinitely. This decision aims to prevent what the authority describes as misuse of these networks, leading to public shock and media scrutiny. Major platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook are affected, with the authority citing concerns over inappropriate content and threats to social cohesion.

Africa-Press. The Gabonese High Authority for Communications decided on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, to suspend social media services nationwide immediately and indefinitely.

The authority explained that this measure aims to prevent what it described as “misuse of these networks,” a decision that has sparked shock and bewilderment among the public and media.

As a result of this decision, several popular platforms, including WhatsApp and Facebook, have ceased operations in the country.

The authority confirmed that this ban applies to all networks without exception. In its statement, the High Authority for Communications did not provide specific examples of the incidents that prompted this decision, but it indicated that it had “monitored” the recent circulation of content deemed “inappropriate, defamatory, inciting hatred, and degrading, threatening social cohesion, state institutions’ stability, and national security.”

The authority believes that social media platforms are being used in violation of Gabonese laws and international agreements, pointing to the prevalence of public disorder, the spread of misinformation, and the rise of cyberbullying.

The criticism was not limited to certain users; the authority also directed its criticism at the companies owning these platforms, arguing that they do not make sufficient efforts to monitor and prevent illegal content.

WhatsApp, Facebook, and TikTok are among the most widely used applications in Gabon. The announcement of this decision was made through the official channel “Gabon Première,” where it was read by the spokesperson for the Gabonese National Conference, Jean-Claude Mendoum, confirming that the measures will remain in effect until further notice.

Gabon has faced challenges regarding freedom of expression and media regulation, particularly in the context of political unrest and social movements. The government’s control over communication channels has often been a point of contention, with previous instances of internet shutdowns during elections or protests. This latest suspension reflects ongoing tensions between state authorities and civil liberties, as the government seeks to manage information flow amid rising concerns over misinformation and public safety.
