Africa-Press. Official media in South Sudan reported late Wednesday that President Salva Kiir dismissed the army chief and finance minister, who had held their positions for less than three months.
These dismissals are the latest in a series of frequent changes in senior positions within Kiir’s government in recent years, which analysts say indicate an effort to consolidate power amid uncertainty regarding succession.
The dismissed army chief, General Paul Nang, had been in his position since October and faced increasing scrutiny amid worsening insecurity in the country, while Finance Minister Salvatore Garang Mabiordit had held the position since February 23.
South Sudan’s broadcasting corporation reported the appointment of General Santino Deng Wol as the new army chief, and Colonel Daniel Ayul, a seasoned technical expert who previously served as deputy minister of finance and trade, as the new finance minister.
