Badr Abdelatty Urges Diplomacy between Washington and Tehran

Africa-Press. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Atti emphasized his country’s commitment to prioritizing the diplomatic and negotiation path between the United States and Iran, stressing the continuation of Egyptian efforts to de-escalate and contain the rising tensions in the region.

During his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting held in New Delhi, Abdel Atti noted that Egypt is keen on enhancing bilateral cooperation in major national projects, notably the Dabaa nuclear power plant and the Russian industrial zone in the Suez Canal economic area.

The two sides discussed prospects for coordination within BRICS, focusing on supporting reforms of the global financial system and enhancing the role of the development bank associated with the group in financing development priorities in developing countries.

Regarding the Palestinian issue, the Egyptian minister affirmed the importance of completing the implementation of the second phase of the American plan, while ensuring the flow of humanitarian and medical aid to Gaza and paving the way for recovery and reconstruction.

The meeting also addressed developments in Sudan, where Abdel Atti stressed support for the country’s unity and rejected the establishment of parallel entities, emphasizing the importance of launching a comprehensive political path led by Sudanese leaders.

In the Libyan file, the Egyptian minister reiterated his country’s support for Libya’s unity and stability, and the necessity of unifying national institutions to reach a political settlement that paves the way for presidential and parliamentary elections.

Additionally, Abdel Atti and Lavrov discussed developments in the Horn of Africa, with Abdel Atti affirming Egypt’s support for stability in Somalia, stressing that the security of the Red Sea must remain the responsibility of the bordering countries.

For his part, Lavrov expressed Moscow’s appreciation for the level of cooperation with Cairo, emphasizing the importance of continued consultation and coordination between the two countries on regional and international issues of mutual interest.
