Africa-Press. France and Morocco have announced their readiness to sign a new treaty aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and strategic partnership between the two countries during an upcoming visit by Moroccan King Mohammed VI to Paris.

The Moroccan Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, stated that this treaty will be the first signed by Morocco with a European country, emphasizing that Moroccan-French relations are “experiencing their best phases” across various levels, particularly in defense, security, and aerospace industries.

French Foreign Minister, Jean-Noël Barrot, confirmed that the anticipated agreement aims to lay the groundwork for long-term relations between the two countries, describing the treaty as “the first of its kind” between France and a non-European country.

This rapprochement follows an improvement in relations between Rabat and Paris since France recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara in 2024, a stance that has caused tension in Franco-Algerian relations due to Algeria’s support for the Polisario Front.

The French official also stressed that Morocco is France’s primary economic partner in Africa, in addition to its role as a financial and logistical hub connecting Paris with several West African countries and the Sahel region, where Rabat has expanded its economic and investment presence in recent years.

During the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Rabat in 2024, the two countries signed agreements and investment projects exceeding 10 billion euros, covering sectors such as transportation, energy, and infrastructure.
