Africa-Press. At least 10 students have died following a fire that broke out in a dormitory at a school in the Nakuru area of central Kenya, according to local media reports citing a senior security official.
A local radio station reported that rescue and emergency teams were continuing search operations inside the dormitory at a girls’ academy, where the fire started around 1 AM local time (22:00 GMT), as stated by the regional police chief.
A police official in the district expressed to the parents of the students who gathered outside the school in shock, “It is a painful and tragic situation,” according to a local television channel.
The radio station added that firefighters and police personnel were deployed to the scene to control the fire and evacuate the remaining students, while the cause of the blaze remains unknown.
The regional police chief confirmed on Thursday morning that rescue operations were still ongoing inside the school, with emergency teams continuing to search the burned dormitory.
Firefighters, police, and rescue teams were dispatched to the incident site, intensifying efforts to control the flames and evacuate students from the affected dormitory.
Several students were injured in the incident and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, as announced by the police.
The police chief stated that investigations had already begun to determine the cause of the deadly fire, while authorities are working to account for all students affected by the tragedy.
In 2024, another fire resulted in the deaths of 21 students at a boarding primary school in the neighboring Nyeri County.
