Somalia: Calm Returns to Mogadishu

Africa-Press. The Somali government announced that it has restored order in the capital, Mogadishu, following armed clashes that erupted in recent days between government forces and armed groups linked to the opposition, confirming that the security situation is now under control.

The Somali Minister of Security, Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail, stated that security forces managed to contain the confrontations, reopen main roads, and remove barriers set up by armed groups within some neighborhoods of the capital, noting that state institutions continue to perform their duties normally.

The government accused some opposition leaders of attempting to exploit political disagreements to incite security disturbances, reaffirming its commitment to dialogue to address political issues within constitutional and legal frameworks.

The clashes arose against a backdrop of escalating tensions between the government and opposition parties that reject constitutional amendments and electoral reforms proposed by the administration of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. The confrontations resulted in casualties and the displacement of several residents from affected areas.

The United Nations had previously expressed concern over the violence, urging all parties to exercise restraint and return to dialogue to avoid undermining the security and political gains achieved by Somalia in recent years.

These developments come at a time when Somalia continues its military operations against the Al-Shabaab group, raising concerns that internal political disputes may affect efforts to combat armed groups and enhance stability in the country.
