Congo Reports Rise in Confirmed Ebola Cases

Africa-Press. The Democratic Republic of the Congo has announced an increase in the number of confirmed cases of Ebola virus to nearly 600, raising local awareness about the importance of preventive measures.

The outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus was declared on May 15, but officials reported that it remained undetected for weeks, leading to delays in the health authorities’ response and difficulties in controlling it.

The world is witnessing one of the largest outbreaks of the Ebola virus in three provinces that have long suffered from armed conflict: Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu.

In its latest statement published on X, the Congolese government reported that the number of confirmed Ebola cases has risen to 598, including 115 deaths. The statement also noted that 22 patients have recovered from the disease, and new cases have not spread to other health areas.

Cases have been recorded in 17 health zones in Ituri, as well as seven health zones in North Kivu and one health zone in South Kivu.

The statement read: “If you are experiencing fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or severe weakness, you should immediately go to the nearest health center,” urging residents to follow the instructions of health workers and not to assault them.

A lack of trust and resistance has hindered response efforts, with reports of attacks on burial teams and treatment centers. Medical staff are facing difficulties in securing essential equipment needed to ensure their safety and prevent the spread of the disease, according to more than a dozen doctors, humanitarian workers, and public health officials.

On Tuesday, the international relief organization “International Rescue Committee” called for the necessary funding to contain the outbreak in Ituri province before it spreads further.
