Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Eswatini Medical Christian University (EMCU) is making significant strides towards offering quality medical education, thanks to its collaboration with South Africa’s Wits University.
This partnership aims to prepare EMCU for the enrollment of students in its newly accredited medical program, the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS).
Assessment and Preparation
Dr. Bongani Dlamini, a key figure in the initiative, reported that professionals from Wits University are currently assessing EMCU’s readiness to teach medical studies. This assessment follows a series of consultations between the two institutions, including a recent educational trip by EMCU management to Wits University. The purpose of this trip was to observe how Wits delivers its medical courses, with the intention of applying best practices back home.
Reciprocal Visits and Standards
The visit from Wits University professionals to EMCU is part of a reciprocal arrangement, ensuring that EMCU adheres to international standards in medical education. This collaboration is formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2022, which emphasizes skills-sharing between the two universities.
Admission Process for MBBS Program
As it was reported in June last year by this publication, EMCU has officially opened applications for its MBBS program, which has received approval from the Eswatini Higher Education Council (ESHEC). Prospective students must meet specific entry requirements, including:

Successful applicants will undergo interviews and essay writing sessions, with outcomes communicated via the university’s website or through phone calls.
Conclusion
The collaboration between EMCU and Wits University represents a significant advancement in medical education in Eswatini. With the opening of the MBBS program, EMCU is poised to train future medical professionals locally, addressing the need for qualified healthcare providers in the region. This initiative not only enhances educational opportunities but also contributes to the overall improvement of healthcare services in Eswatini.
