Bai Mamoud Bangura former Organising Secretary of the All-People’s Congress (APC), has formally announced his candidacy for the party’s leadership and flagbearer position ahead of the 2028 general elections.
At a public declaration event attended by party supporters and notable figures, Bangura, who has served as the party’s Organizing Secretary and held ministerial roles including that of Youth Minister, stated that his campaign is grounded in principles of democratic integrity, youth empowerment, and grassroots mobilization.
Bangura underscored the importance of electoral transparency, asserting that the APC’s future leadership must be chosen through democratic voting rather than internal negotiations. “I bring a leadership which believes that election results and outcomes must be determined by the people through their ballots and not by any roundtable discussion,” he declared.
Drawing on over two decades of party involvement, Bangura described his leadership style as one rooted in loyalty, commitment, and familiarity with the party’s core values. He called for a “renewed leadership” that aligns with the founding vision of the APC, stating the party needs to be “formidable, undisputed, and election-ready” for the 2028 vote.
Bangura also highlighted his personal background, including the loss of both parents at an early age and being raised by older siblings. These experiences, he said, influenced his decision to establish the Bai Mamoud Bangura (BMB) Foundation a charitable organization that supports underprivileged communities without regard to political or ethnic affiliation.
Though acknowledging limited financial resources compared to other contenders, Bangura said his strength lies in grassroots support: “I don’t have money, but I have the people and that’s more powerful.”
He announced his resignation as Assistant Secretary-General of the APC to fully focus on his leadership campaign. Bangura expressed his readiness to collaborate with all party members to ensure unity and electoral success, saying, “I’ll work with every one of you to ensure APC wins the next elections.”
His declaration was met with public endorsements from prominent APC members, including Hon. Abdul Karim Kamara, the party’s Parliamentary Whip, who said, “Bai Mamoud has served the APC, and now it is time for the APC to reward him and the young generation with the leadership.”
Student leader Allieu Sanusi Koroma commended the BMB Foundation’s work with disadvantaged youth, while party elder Alimamy Papa Kamara used the occasion to encourage all aspirants to uphold peace, unity, and national cohesion.
As the APC prepares for its next national convention, Bangura’s announcement signals the beginning of what is expected to be a competitive internal race for the party’s leadership. Other aspirants have yet to formally declare, but Bangura’s emphasis on youth involvement, grassroots mobilization, and democratic processes is likely to influence the tone of the party’s leadership contest moving forward.
