Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. President Julius Maada Bio’s decision to travel by road to neighbouring Liberia on Saturday, 26 July 2025, drew attention in Sierra Leone, particularly from former opposition leader Mohamed Kamarainba Mansaray, who acknowledged the move in a social media post.
Kamarainba praised the President for choosing road transport over a private jet, describing it as a responsible and considerate decision.
President Bio, who regularly travels by air to attend international meetings, summits, and official functions, made an exception for this trip. His journey to Monrovia was to participate in Liberia’s 178th Independence Anniversary celebrations, where he joined other West African leaders for the national event.
At the ceremony, he was presented with a plaque by the Liberian government in recognition of Sierra Leone’s support during Liberia’s civil conflict. The honour also reflected his past role as a Sierra Leonean officer deployed to Liberia under the ECOWAS peacekeeping mission, ECOMOG.
The method of travel drew discussion within Sierra Leone, where the public has in recent years shown growing attention to presidential travel, particularly the use of air transport. Many noted this journey was different from his usual way of travelling.
President Bio is believed to have returned to Sierra Leone by road later the same day, although this has not been officially confirmed.
