Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Vice Chancellor and Principal of Milton Margai Technical University (MMTU), Professor Philip John Kanu, held a high-level meeting with senior officials at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) in Cambridge, United Kingdom, as part of efforts to strengthen international collaboration and research-driven solutions to national challenges.
During his visit to ARU’s Chelmsford Campus, Professor Kanu met with Dr. Robin Gowers, head of the Writtle School of Agriculture. He was given a tour of the university’s experimental farm and greenhouses, where postgraduate students are actively engaged in agricultural research.
Key discussions focused on potential partnerships in research and capacity building for MMTU lecturers, especially in the areas of agriculture, engineering, health, and education. Professor Kanu visited several of ARU’s faculties including the Faculty of Business and Law; Faculty of Science and Engineering (which houses the School of Engineering and the Built Environment); Faculty of Arts, Humanities, Education and Social Sciences; and the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Social Care.
A significant highlight of the meeting was a proposed collaborative research initiative addressing the growing threat of substance abuse in Sierra Leone; particularly drugs like Kush and tramadol and their devastating impact on youth, agriculture, and the national economy. Professor Kanu emphasized the urgency of this issue and expressed MMTU’s interest in partnering with ARU to develop evidence-based solutions.
This engagement marks a positive step towards fostering global academic partnerships and advancing research that addresses critical societal issues in Sierra Leone.
