Chinese Embassy Donates Surveillance Gear to Police

Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. In a strong demonstration of bilateral cooperation, the Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone has officially donated surveillance equipment to the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) to support the country’s ongoing “Safe City” Project. The donation, presented during a formal ceremony attended by senior officials and law enforcement representatives, includes 45 CCTV cameras, three Huawei monitors, and three Lenovo laptops, all manufactured in China.

Speaking at the event, Chinese Embassy representative Hon. Zhang Diabin highlighted the significance of the contribution for public safety. “These items will assist the SLP in implementing its ‘Safe City’ Project by equipping CCTV systems across the country,” he said, emphasizing that the donation symbolizes China’s commitment to peace, security, and the well-being of Sierra Leonean citizens.

Inspector General of Police, Mr. William Fayia Sellu, expressed gratitude on behalf of the SLP, acknowledging China’s longstanding support even during Sierra Leone’s civil war. He noted that the “Safe City” Project, initiated in 2014 and revitalized under President Julius Maada Bio, aims to enhance crime prevention nationwide. IG Sellu revealed that over 36 surveillance cameras have already been installed in Freetown, including at the Princess Christian Maternity Hospital at Cottage, in response to a rise in child theft incidents.

The Inspector General further emphasized that the newly donated equipment—45 CCTV cameras, three laptops, and three 65-inch plasma screens—will strengthen the police’s ability to monitor all six police regions. He also praised China for supporting the media sector and providing advanced training opportunities for Sierra Leonean officers.

“This substantial intervention from China will help us better ensure the safety of our people,” IG Sellu said, expressing optimism that the enhanced surveillance network will contribute to a reduction in crime rates in the coming months. The ceremony concluded with the official signing and handover of the donated items, marking a milestone in Sierra Leone-China bilateral relations.
