Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. With just days remaining before the 13th West Africa Deaf Football Championship begins in Abuja, Nigeria, Sierra Leone’s national Deaf football team is facing uncertainty over participation due to insufficient funding.
According to information obtained by this medium, the team requires immediate financial assistance to cover travel, accommodation, and logistical expenses. Without such support, the delegation may be unable to attend the tournament, which is scheduled to run from 19th to 30th August 2025 at the MKO Abiola National Stadium.
Team officials have appealed to the Ministry of Sports, the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), the National Sports Authority (NSA), and private sector sponsors to intervene. The delegation is expected to depart over the weekend.
The championship will feature teams from 12 West African countries, including Liberia, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, Ghana, Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, Togo, Senegal, Nigeria, and Guinea-Conakry. The event will also host the 3rd West Africa Deaf Athletics Championship, with more than 200 athletes expected to compete.
Speaking in Lagos, the President of the West Africa Deaf Sports Union (WADSU), Amuda Yusuf Ibrahim, described the tournament as an important platform for athletes to demonstrate their abilities and qualify for major international events such as the Deaflympics and the All Africa Deaf Games.
For Sierra Leone’s Deaf football team, participation in Abuja now depends on whether adequate funding can be secured in the coming days.
