Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Suspended Clark of Parliament, Hon. Paran Tarawally, may face possible disqualification from contesting for the position of National Secretary General in the upcoming Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) elections.
A report from Concord Times Newspaper disclosed that Tarawally has been petitioned by a member of the SLPP, Philip Tetema Tondorneh, requesting his disqualification due to corruption.
The petition letter was submitted to the Internal Elections Monitoring and Oversight Committee (IEMOC) of the SLPP, the body responsible for election oversight in the party.
The petition stated that the ACC had once found Hon. Tarawally guilty of unlawfully placing his wife on the parliamentary payroll for three years, during which she received government salaries without being entitled to them. The ACC reportedly directed Hon. Tarawally to repay the full amount.
“This finding is not a mere allegation; it is a fact by the country’s anti-graft body,” the petition reads. “It meets the threshold set in our 2021 party convention, which states that any person found guilty of corruption by the State must wait five years before contesting for any position within the party.”
The petition stated that failure to enforce the precedent set during the SLPP’s 2021 delegate convention, where two candidates vying for the same position were disqualified-one for corruption, and the other for registration irregularities- would not only undermine IEMOC’s credibility but also damage the image of the SLPP as a whole.
“We cannot afford to send a message to our delegates, supporters, and the general public that corruption is negotiable or selectively enforced in our great party,” he emphasised.
The petition was copied to regional representatives of IEMOC from the East, South, West, North, and Northwest, as well as to former Members of Parliament and the party’s Director of Administration. An ACC report is also said to have been attached for reference.
The IEMOC has yet to officially respond to the petition.
