Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. Some residents of Kono District have expressed support for former Vice President Alhaji Samuel Sidique Sam-Sumana to be chosen as the All People’s Congress (APC) party flag bearer for the 2028 general elections.
At a recent gathering, supporters carried placards urging the APC to back Sam Sumana for the party’s presidential candidate position.
The messages on the placards included calls for the APC to give Sam Sumana a chance, warnings that the party could lose without Kono’s support, and appeals for other political figures to step back from his presidential ambition. Supporters described him as the only option they trust to lead the APC to victory in the next election.
Sam Sumana served as Sierra Leone’s Vice President from September 2007 to March 2015 under former President Ernest Bai Koroma. In March 2015, he was removed from office by President Koroma for reasons including alleged abandonment of his post and issues related to party membership. Sam Sumana later challenged the removal, appealing to the Sierra Leone Supreme Court.
Following his removal, Sam Sumana was expelled from the APC by the party’s National Advisory Council on grounds including alleged false information about his academic credentials and religion, as well as accusations of inciting political violence. Sam Sumana denied these allegations and has appealed his expulsion.
After leaving the APC, Sam Sumana led a breakaway group called the Coalition for Change (C4C). He contested the 2018 general elections under this new party, winning eight parliamentary seats and several council seats, mainly in Kono District.
More recently, Sam Sumana rejoined the APC, but questions remain about his eligibility to run for party leadership positions due to party rules regarding past expulsions.
While Sam Sumana has not officially announced plans to seek the APC flagbearer position for 2028, his name remains popular among some supporters in Kono, who view him as a strong candidate capable of helping the party win the next general election.
The APC is yet to make any official statement regarding potential candidates for the upcoming election. As the 2028 polls draw closer, attention is expected to grow around the party’s internal processes and who may emerge as its next flagbearer.
