Africa-Press – Sierra-Leone. The Government of Sierra Leone has released several prisoners, including Alpha Sheriff, as part of the ongoing implementation of the Agreement for National Unity signed in October 2023.
APC Sheriff was arrested in connection with the November 26 failed coup in Sierra Leone.
The decision to release Sheriff and other political prisoners follows recommendations contained in the TRIPATITE report which brings out 80 recommendations which the Government, and the opposition should implement.
The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Alpha Sesay, said the government carefully reviewed a list submitted by the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) Party. After examination, it was determined that those named are not subject to any current criminal investigations. These individuals are now free to resume their normal daily activities.
The released list includes 37 people, among them Alpha Sheriff, Idrissa Hamid Kamara, Inspector Sullay Deen Sesay, and retired Captain Desmond Gebara.
The National Unity Agreement includes several important terms. These include the release of detainees who are not under investigation, settling overdue payments owed to APC members of parliament and local council leaders, and following up on recommendations from a Tripartite Committee that reviewed concerns about the 2023 elections.
The released individuals can now continue with their personal and professional lives without restrictions related to their previous detentions.
These actions come as part of ongoing efforts by the government and opposition to reduce political tensions and promote unity in Sierra Leone after the 2023 elections.
