Africa-Press – Tanzania. COAST Region Commissioner, Mr Abubakar Kunenge, has called on the National Legal Aid Advisory Board to intensify efforts in educating communities about legal rights and procedures to help prevent unnecessary conflicts and promote peace, especially as the country prepares for the upcoming General Election.
Speaking during a meeting with Board members at his office in Kibaha Town earlier this week, RC Kunenge stressed that public awareness of legal rights is essential for fostering harmony and responsible citizenship.
“Providing legal education to the people is a fundamental step that will help them understand their rights and responsibilities, resolve disputes amicably and avoid unnecessary conflicts,” he said.
He further urged the Board to strengthen collaboration with other legal stakeholders, including the Judiciary, to identify areas facing legal challenges, review policies and outdated laws and ensure justice is served with fairness and professionalism.
On his part, the Board’s Chairperson, Mr Saulo Malauli, said that the visit aimed to assess the progress of the ongoing Mama Samia Legal Aid Campaign in the Coast Region.
“We are identifying areas with challenges and taking appropriate action to ensure legal aid services are delivered effectively and in accordance with existing policies and legal frameworks,” he said.
In a related development, Acting Coast Regional Administrative Secretary (RAS), Mr Nsajigwa George, urged nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) operating in the region to maintain transparency and adhere strictly to established guidelines to enhance their impact in society.
Speaking at a one-day stakeholders’ meeting held in Kibaha Town this week, Mr George reminded NGOs of their crucial role in maintaining peace and stability, especially in this politically sensitive period.
“As we approach the General Election in October this year, I want to remind all NGOs in the region to carry out their activities in line with national laws and their core missions. Do not allow yourselves to be drawn into political divisions or become a source of confusion during this time,” he cautioned.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working hand in hand with NGOs to safeguard peace and promote sustainable development.
