Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) has called on political parties to ensure that their candidates for the presidency, House of Representatives and council positions collect, complete and return nomination forms on time to avoid violating electoral laws.
ZEC Chairperson, Justice George Joseph Kazi made the appeal while opening a stakeholders’ meeting at the Commission’s headquarters at Maisara.
He stressed the importance of correctly filling out the forms, noting that all requirements are stipulated by law.
“Returning officers have already been directed to review forms and guide candidates to correct any omissions before submission deadlines,” he said.
Justice Kazi further highlighted the importance of campaigns as a platform for parties to share their manifestos, policies and plans for the next five years.
He urged political parties to conduct peaceful campaigns, avoid abusive language and adhere to schedules and regulations.
“You must campaign peacefully, avoid hate speech, incitement or threats and work with ZEC and other stakeholders to ensure that elections are conducted in harmony,” he said.
The meeting was aimed at providing an update on preparations for the 2025 General Election and collecting feedback from stakeholders.
Justice Kazi noted that free and fair elections require broad participation from political parties, voters, civil society, security organs, media and special groups including youth, women and persons with disabilities.
ZEC Director of Elections, Ms Thabit Idarous Faina, called for cooperation between stakeholders and the Commission to guarantee a smooth and peaceful electoral process.
The one-day meeting brought together regional and district leaders, youth groups, persons with disabilities, journalists and other stakeholders. Discussions covered election preparations, campaign ethics, display of campaign materials and the launch of a ZEC call centre.
Participants urged ZEC to closely monitor key aspects of the election to prevent disputes.
