Africa-Press – Tanzania. A TOTAL of 38 parliamentary candidates from five out of the nine constituencies in Kilimanjaro Region have been officially approved by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to contest in the upcoming General Election scheduled for October 29.

As of Thursday, the constituencies with approved candidates included Moshi Urban, Moshi Rural, Vunjo, Siha and Mwanga.

Speaking on the development, Moshi Urban Constituency Returning Officer, Sifael Kulanga, confirmed that 11 candidates from various political parties had been cleared to vie for the parliamentary seats. Political parties whose candidates had been cleared include Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), Chama Cha Ukombozi wa Umma (CHAUMMA), ACT- Wazalendo, Civic United Front (CUF), Makini, SAU, CCK, NRA, TLP, AAFP and ADC.

For Moshi Rural, Returning Officer Lucas Msele stated that nine candidates had been approved, representing CCM, CHAUMA, CUF, CCK, ADATADEA, TLP, NRA, ACTWazalendo and AAFP.

Mr Msele, who also serves as the Returning Officer for Vunjo Constituency, confirmed that nine candidates from CCM, CHAUMA, DP, ACTWazalendo, ADA-TADEA, Makini, CCK, AAFP and TLP had been cleared to contest.

“In both Moshi Rural and Vunjo, a total of 10 candidates had collected nomination forms.

However, two candidates—one from Makini (Moshi Rural) and one from NRA (Vunjo)—did not return their forms,” he explained.

In Siha Constituency, Returning Officer Marco Masue announced that six candidates had been approved to run for the parliamentary seat.

The cleared candidates represent CCM, ACT- Wazalendo, Makini, SAU, CUF and NRA.

In Mwanga Constituency, Returning Officer Robert Tarimo stated that five candidates collected nomination forms, but only three were approved to contest. These represent CCM, ACT-Wazalendo and NRA.

“The NCCR-Mageuzi candidate was disqualified due to failing to meet the legal requirement for nomination, specifically lacking the minimum number of required sponsors,” said Tarimo.

“The Makini party candidate failed to return the nomination form.”

With the nomination process concluded, all 38 approved parliamentary candidates from the five constituencies are now eligible to begin campaigning. Official election campaigns began yesterday.

Tanzanians will head to the polls to elect the President, Members of Parliament and Councillors in what is expected to be a highly competitive election cycle.
