Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar has pledged to strengthen its cooperation with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to promote better working conditions and safeguard workers’ rights.
Zanzibar Chief Secretary (CS) and Secretary to the Revolutionary Council, Ms Zena Ahmed Said expressed the commitment in her remarks she made at Jambiani area during a two-day workshop on international labour conventions.
The forum was aimed to build awareness among government officials and labour stakeholders in Zanzibar ahead of the signing and implementation of selected conventions.
She said the initiative will help workers in Zanzibar secure decent jobs, improve workplace environments and enhance their quality of life.
“I urge participants to carefully review the provisions of the conventions to enable the government to adopt and apply them effectively,” she told participants.
Deputy Permanent Secretary in the President’s Office ( Labour, Economy and Investment), Mr Rashid Ali Salim, noted that the meeting offered an opportunity to align Zanzibar’s labour laws with international standards while safeguarding workers’ welfare.
Meanwhile, ILO East Africa Director, Ms Caroline Khamati Magulla, assured participants that the ILO will continue working closely with both the Union Government and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar to implement the conventions, including through capacitybuilding and advisory support.
One of the participants, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Lands and Housing Development, Ms Mhaza Gharibu Juma, described the meeting as an important step in strengthening knowledge and professionalism in labour issues, which will enhance the enforcement of labour laws in workplaces.
The two-day meeting brought together labour stakeholders from Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania, including permanent secretaries and deputy permanent secretaries of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar
