Africa-Press – Tanzania. TANZANIAN boxing prodigy Faru Issa, alias ‘Faru Weusi’, has imprinted his name into the history books at the World Boxing Championships, even though his remarkable journey concluded in the Round of 16.
The 22-year-old displayed exceptional skill, courage and composure against Kazakhstan’s Saken Bibbosinov, the world’s No. 7 ranked Bantamweight (54kg) fighter.
Although he bowed out on points, Faki’s spirited performance signalled a breakthrough moment for Tanzanian boxing on the global stage.
His earlier victory shattered a 51-year national drought, making him the first Tanzanian boxer since Emmanuel Mlundwa who defeated Puerto Rico’s Alfredo Pereira in Havana in 1974 to win a bout at the World Championships.
Tanzania Boxing Federation (BFT) President Lukelo Willilo praised Faki’s historic achievement, noting that the nation had finally rewritten a record untouched for more than five decades.
“Though we did not reach our ultimate objective, we remain committed to building on this achievement and aiming for medals in future World Championships. Faki’s accomplishment represents a historic milestone in Tanzanian boxing,” Willilo said.
He added “By winning a bout at the World Championships for the first time in 51 years, he has rewritten the national record book, breaking a long-standing barrier that had symbolised decades of limited international success.”
Willilo also highlighted the broader impact of Faki’s performance saying, “This achievement demonstrates that Tanzanian athletes can compete with the world’s elite, strengthening national pride and elevating Tanzania’s profile on the global sporting stage. His determination and resilience offer inspiration to young athletes across the country.
”He emphasised that Faki’s journey provides a powerful message for aspiring boxers and other athletes, Faki has become a living example that international recognition is within reach. His performance reminds us of the value of hard work, discipline and perseverance.”
Willilo concluded by stressing the significance of investment in sports saying the breakthrough highlights the growing potential of Tanzanian sports.
Faki’s success illustrates the importance of investing in athlete development, training programmes and international exposure.
It sends a clear message to sports authorities, sponsors and policymakers that Tanzanian talent deserves strong support and that consistent investment can produce historic results.
