Election Supervisors Trained to Uphold Democracy in Ilemela

Africa-Press – Tanzania. A TOTAL of 2,870 election supervisors and assistant supervisors in Ilemela Municipal Council have begun a two-day training on managing the upcoming General Election, being reminded that their role is a constitutional duty requiring professionalism, impartiality and a deep understanding of the law.

Opening the training, Ilemela Election Supervisor Mr Herbert Bilia said the supervisors will manage 944 polling stations across 19 wards.

“You are the ones who will oversee the voting, counting, and preliminary results of presidential, parliamentary and councillor elections. From your appointment, you are employees of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and must act according to the law and without bias,” he said.

He added that the training is a vital step in safeguarding peace and democracy since all electoral processes begin at polling stations, where supervisors act as guardians of fairness.

Mr Bilia urged supervisors to study key documents including the Constitution, the Electoral Act No1 of 2024 and INEC guidelines to ensure each stage of the election is handled lawfully and transparently.

He reminded them to prepare stations early, inspect equipment and ensure voters are served without discrimination.

“You should arrive before 7:00 am, inspect ballot boxes, set up tables, and ensure everything is ready. After the exercise, all materials must be properly stored and returned,” he said.

Participants, including Mr Leonard Mwita, Ms Zainabu Shija, and Ms Fatuma Kilimali, said the training has equipped them to handle their duties with professionalism and fairness
